My love for maps began with a childhood fascination for folded paper maps we used during family travels, and deepened while planning a six-month journey around the world with my toddler, just a few months after starting Famille Summerbelle. I’ve always been captivated by the intricate details and stories paper maps reveal, inspiring me to create my own hand-cut, illustrated versions that celebrate the unique spirit of each city. Each map begins with in-depth research and detailed sketching, as I immerse myself in the city’s layout, landmarks, and everyday life. Working in reverse on a single sheet of paper, I carefully draw each element before using a scalpel to cut away the negative spaces. The magic happens when the sheet is flipped, revealing a lace-like, intricate map that captures the essence of the place it represents. Cities I’ve designed include Barcelona, Tokyo, Berlin, London, Paris, New York City, San Francisco, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, as well as maps of France and the World.
